An English Blog
A blog covering a variety of human rights related topics in a variety of formats.
I had heard horror stories about Grade 11 English. Other students, whether they be currently in Grade 12 now or Grade 11's who had had this course last semester, made it seem like by the end of this semester I would be 6ft under...a pile of English homework. I'm thrilled to say they were proved wrong. Yes, it was a lot of work, yes, I wasn't thrilled with some of the assignments and yes, quite a few times throughout the semester I was feeling lazy and I resented every single piece that I had to write for this course. But it was worth it. The material was fascinating, educating about human rights in a way that I had never been taught before and in a way that made me feel passionate about what I was learning. The reading for the course WAS ACTUALLY FASCINATING! I have never been given required reading that I actually wanted to read and I was ecstatic once I realized that the book we were to read was decent. The passion and depth to which we were taught about First Nation rights and discrimination was intriguing and has inspired me to investigate further into the topic, especially as I wish to pursue journalism. There is not enough knowledge on the topic as a whole in society and I now wish to change that. But there was one thing, namely person, that made this course so incredible. Mrs Linnerth is one of the best teachers in the school. I love English and she taught in a way that made me love it even more. She taught with passion, something that tends to be lacking in most high school English classes, and rather than having to ask for respect I found myself already willing to give her what she deserves. I have never had another teacher who i have found myself relating to or who has understood what I need as a student but she did. I wish she could teach me English again next year, or even every other course that I am going to take. I will miss her next year. Thank you.
